Nauvoo RidgeTransmission Line Project

American Electric Power plans to increase electric reliability by upgrading the transmission system serving customers in Marshall County. The Nauvoo Ridge Transmission Line Project involves building approximately 8 miles of 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line. Approximately 4 miles of the proposed power line parallel an existing transmission line. The project team reviewed route options for the remaining 4 miles.

The project addresses stress on the area's electric system. The existing transmission line is currently serving three large industrial customers and experiences prolonged outages when maintenance on the transmission line or substation is required. The upgrades provide a second source of power to the area, increasing electric reliability and reducing extended outages.

Company representatives expect construction to begin January 2025 and conclude by June 2026.

Project Updates

3/26/24: The project schedule has changed. Construction is expected to begin in January 2025 and conclude in June 2026.

9/26/23: The project team is planning to submit an application to the Public Service Commission of West Virginia (PSC) in spring 2024. This date has been updated from fall 2023.

9/15/23: The project team has determined the proposed power line route after reviewing future and existing land use, environmental impacts and input gathered from a virtual community open house and landowner discussions. The interactive map above shows the proposed transmission line route that crews plan to build. Impacted property owners can expect to hear about next steps from Contract Land Staff, the right-of-way contractor representing American Electric Power.

8/24/23: The project team is still working to determine a proposed line route. The new line is paralleling an existing line for the majority of the route. Our right-of-way team continues to conduct field studies and work with landowners to review possible route adjustments to minimize impacts.

American Electric Power representatives encourage landowners to submit their feedback about the project by June 30, 2023.
