Appalachian Power and its affiliate, West Virginia Transmission Co., plan to make significant upgrades to the transmission system in southern West Virginia to improve electric reliability.
The Boone - South Charleston Project will rebuild about 18 miles of an existing transmission line, relocate a substation and make upgrades to additional substations to provide Boone and Kanawha counties with a modern and robust transmission grid.
The project is the second phase of the larger Boone County Area Improvements Project. Construction is currently underway and is expected to be complete by the end of 2020.
Estimated budget for this phase is $40 million.
9/20/2019 - Crews will begin clearing trees and building access roads this fall. Construction of the transmission line is
expected to begin early 2020 and conclude by the end of 2020.
10/19/2017 - Appalachian Power has determined a proposed line route for both phases of the Boone County Area Improvements Project. Appalachian Power right-of-way representatives from O.R. Colan will continue to contact affected landowners to discuss upcoming project activities.
4/12/2017 - Appalachian Power held an open house at Ruthdale Elementary to introduce the Boone-South Charleston phase to the public. The open house allowed the company to share study segments, answer questions related to the project and gather feedback from the community.
