Astor - East Broad Street138-kV Transmission Line Rebuild Project
AEP Ohio representatives plan power grid upgrades in eastern Columbus. The project involves rebuilding just under 3 miles of 138-kilovolt (kV) transmission line connecting AEP Ohio's Astor Substation off Astor Avenue to the East Broad Street Substation off East Broad Street near McNaughten Road.
The poles and wires along the nearly 70-year-old transmission line have deteriorated and require frequent maintenance. Company representatives need to replace the line as it approaches the end of its useful service life. Installing modern steel poles and wires reduces power outages and improves the local electric service reliability.
* This project requires Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) approval.
Project Updates
Spring 2026: AEP Ohio crews and contractors are conducting survey work along McNaughten Road in east Columbus near Reynoldsburg, resulting in temporary traffic pattern changes for the area. Survey activities will begin near Astor Avenue and continue north to Sister Nancy Ganse Lane and are expected to continue through mid-May, weather permitting. Motorists along McNaughten Road should expect temporary lane closures between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. with flaggers on-site as needed to maintain safe traffic flow. These lane closures will be temporary and move as survey work progresses.
