Lulu-Sorenson Transmission Improvements Project

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) representatives plan power grid upgrades to improve electric reliability for customers in northeastern Indiana and southern Michigan. The Lulu-Sorenson Transmission Improvements Project involves building approximately 75 miles of 765-kilovolt (kV) transmission line between the Sorenson Substation, located near North Gundy Road in Jackson, and extending to a point at the Indiana-Michigan state line. Company representatives also plan to make improvements to the existing Sorenson Substation.

Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), the regional transmission operator who oversees and monitors the power grid across 15 states, mandated this project as part of its long-range plan. The plan focuses on building a 765-kV backbone in the Midwest to carry electricity long distances, strengthening the power grid and improving electric service for customers.

Your community benefits from the project through tax revenues generated from construction, job creation, and an increase in future electric capacity. Additional electric capacity creates an opportunity for growth and community development in eastern Indiana.
