Southern MishawakaArea Improvements Project

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) representatives plan to improve electric service reliability for customers in Mishawaka through the Southern Mishawaka Area Improvements Project. The project includes:

  • Upgrading Dragoon Substation located near the intersection of South Taylor Street and East 13th Street.
  • Relocating about 1 mile of electric transmission line between Dragoon Substation and the Union Street Substation operated by Mishawaka Utilities.

Company representatives plan to relocate the power line within a 40 to 60-foot right-of-way corridor and plan to acquire new property easements to ensure safe construction, operation and maintenance of the line.

The project strengthens the electric transmission system by replacing aging substation equipment and power lines with modern equipment and structures. These upgrades enhance safety standards, improve the operational efficiency of the lines and reduce the chances of needing repairs.

Project UPDATES

Early 2026: During a public open house last spring, I&M representatives offered study segments to help determine where to relocate the power line between Dragoon Substation and Mishawaka Utilities' Union Street Substation. After reviewing land use, environmental impacts and community input following the open house, company representatives determined a proposed power line route. The map at the top of this page shows the general location of the proposed line route.

Contract Land Staff (CLS) serves as I&M's right-of-way representative for this project. Landowners along the proposed line route can expect to hear from a CLS right-of-way agent in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your support with this important project.

Structures

Structure

The project involves installing wood poles, with steel poles used in areas needing extra reinforcement.

Typical Structure Height: Approximately 75 feet*
Typical Right-of-Way Width: Approximately 40-60 feet**

* Exact structure, height and right-of-way may vary.
** Planned primarily within the existing road right-of-way.

Photo Simulations

Photo simulations are visual representations showing how proposed changes may look in a real-world environment. These simulations help viewers understand the potential impact of the project on the landscape and surrounding areas. By providing a visual comparison of the existing conditions and the anticipated improvements, stakeholders can better assess the project's design and its integration into the community.
