Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) officials plan to upgrade the electric transmission system in Porter, LaPorte and St. Joseph counties, Indiana. The Olive - University Park 345kV Tower Raise involves raising 35 existing transmission towers between the Sedley area in Porter County and New Carlisle in St. Joseph County.
Unlike a typical transmission project, the towers will not be replaced. Instead, crews will lift existing steel lattice towers and install new steel sections within the structures, increasing tower heights by approximately 10 to 20 feet.
The project increases the distance between the transmission lines and the ground, helping maintain the safe and reliable operation of the electric transmission system. The improvements also address regional transmission needs identified by PJM, the organization responsible for coordinating the flow of electricity across the region.
Construction is expected to begin in August and continue through the end of the year. The transmission line will remain in service throughout construction. Crews will work primarily from existing access routes and within the existing 150-foot-wide transmission line right-of-way.
I&M is committed to working with property owners, community leaders and other stakeholders throughout construction and will make every effort to minimize impacts while completing these important reliability improvements.
