Boone - Cabin Creek


Appalachian Power and its affiliate, AEP West Virginia Transmission Co., plan to strengthen the transmission system in southern West Virginia by upgrading its existing electrical infrastructure.

The Boone - Cabin Creek Project will include rebuilding about 16 miles of transmission line, building a substation, and making upgrades to substations along the project route to provide Boone and Kanawha counties with continued reliable electric service.

The project is the first phase of the larger Boone County Area Improvements Project. Construction began fall 2018 and is expected to be complete by June 2020.

Estimated budget for this phase is $62 million.

Project Updates

11/27/2020:Appalachian Power representatives are currently finishing up construction and working with landowners to restore their properties. Crews plan to begin removing the original transmission line structures this winter. All construction activities are expected to be complete by the end of 2021.

9/20/2019: Construction is currently underway along the transmission line, the new Fields Creek Substation, and at existing substations. The project is expected to be complete by June 2020.

10/15/2018: Crews have begun clearing trees and building access roads in areas where easements have been acquired. Construction of the new Fields Creek Substation is also underway.

10/19/2017: Appalachian Power has determined a proposed line route for both phases of the Boone County Area Improvements Project. Appalachian Power right-of-way representatives from O.R. Colan will continue to contact affected landowners to discuss upcoming project activities.

4/12/2017: Appalachian Power held an open house at Ruthdale Elementary School to introduce the Boone-South Charleston phase to the public. The open house allowed the company to share study segments, answer questions related to the project and gather feedback from the community.

9/22/2016: Appalachian Power held an open house at Racine Community Center to introduce the Boone-Cabin Creek phase to the public. The open house allowed the company to share study segments, answer questions related to the project and gather feedback from the community.

Substations are designed to either increase or decrease electrical voltage so that it can be passed along to customers. This new substation will be a 138 kilovolt substation.
