In 2022, the substation experienced flooding which caused area power outages and impacted its ability to continue serving the area’s electrical load. The area is currently served by a temporary substation. Building the new Levisa Substation on higher ground reduces the risk of weather impacts that could ultimately affect the area’s electric reliability.
6/26/2024: The project team is finalizing engineering details and performing environmental studies to prepare for construction.
2/13/2024: Appalachian Power representatives invite community members and residents to attend a "come-and-go" open house to meet and learn more about this project. Since there is no formal presentation, residents may join the planned event at any time. The open house is planned for Tuesday, March 5, 5 - 7 p.m. at the Appalachian College of Pharmacy, 1060 Dragon Road, Oakwood VA 24631.
Substations serve as electrical intersections converting the power to voltage levels for use in homes, businesses and industrial facilities.
The proposed Levisa Substation plans include a fenced gravel area containing electrical equipment and measuring about 220x155 feet.
*Substation shown is a general depiction of the proposed facilities for the project. It does not represent a final design.
Appalachian Power serves approximately 1 million customers in West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee.
