The Fries-Independence Transmission Line Rebuild Project involves rebuilding approximately 11 miles of electric transmission line, building the proposed Scenic Road Substation and retiring the Fries Substation.
Company representatives expect construction to begin in October 2028 and conclude by December 2029.
6/05/2024: Appalachian Power representatives plan to present to the Town of Independence on June 6th. We previously announced that construction would begin in 2025. Due to project schedule changes, construction activities are being postponed until 2028. Right-of-way agents from OR Colan will continue working with landowners.
1/13/2023: The project team has determined a proposed line route after reviewing land use, environmental impacts and community input following a community open house held in August. Landowners along the proposed route can expect to hear from Appalachian Power's right-of-way representative on the project.
08/04/22: Appalachian Power representatives invite community members and residents in the project area to learn more and provide input by attending an in-person open house on August 18. There is no formal presentation and landowners may come and go at any time during the two-hour event:
Landowners are encouraged to submit their feedback about the project by Monday, August 31. Comments on how this project affects your property or provide special conditions related to your property, you may use the comment form below or call 833-313-3743.
Crews plan to rebuild the line using mainly steel H-frames or three-pole structures depending on the route selected and final engineering.
Typical Structure Height: Approximately 85 feet*
Typical Right-of-Way Width: Approximately 100 feet*
*Exact structure, height and right-of-way requirements may vary.
