Appalachian Power representatives plan to upgrade the local power grid in Buchanan County, Virginia. The Conaway Transmission Improvements Project involves building approximately 6 miles of new 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission line, retiring approximately 6 miles of 34.5-kV transmission line, building the new Conaway Substation, upgrading the Looney Creek Substation, and retiring the Big Rock and Thomas substations. Construction is expected to begin fall 2027 and conclude by late 2028.
August 15, 2024: Appalachian Power representatives are working to determine a proposed line route. The project team is currently reviewing input from landowners.
June 26, 2024: Appalachian Power invites community members and landowners in the project area to an in-person open house July 17, 2024 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Riverview Elementary/Middle School at 27382 Riverside Drive, Grundy VA 24614.
