Grand Saline - QuitmanTransmission Improvements Project

SWEPCO representatives plan to strengthen the electric transmission system in Van Zandt and Wood counties by:

  • Rebuilding 21 miles of 69-kilovolt transmission line
  • Replacing substation equipment
  • Managing trees and woody-stemmed plants that have grown within SWPECO's right-of-way

The transmission line was constructed in 1965 and is in poor condition. Since 2014, the line has experienced more than 20 outages primarily due to weather, equipment, vegetation and station issues, causing nearly 3 million minutes of interruption.

The project:

  • Replaces deteriorating wooden poles with modern steel poles
  • Strengthens the system against severe weather impacts and improves regional reliability
  • Decreases the likelihood and duration of wide, community-sustained outages

Typical Structures

Structure

SWEPCO crews plan to install single-pole steel structures.

Typical Structure Height: 65 feet*
Typical Distance Between Structures - Urban Areas: 250-300 feet*
Typical Distance Between Structures - Rural Areas: 375-425 feet*
Typical Right-of-Way Width: 50-100 feet*

*Exact structure types, height and right-of-way requirements may vary

Determining Right-of-Way Widths

Easements are determined based on engineering tolerances, best practices for vegetation management and other factors.

AEP Transmission right of way agents and their representatives work directly with landowners to determine easement widths on their properties
