Edens RidgeSubstation Expansion


Appalachian Power representatives plan upgrades to the electric transmission grid in Kingsport. The Edens Ridge Substation Expansion involves expanding a substation and rebuilding a small section of line on the substation property.

Crews plan to begin construction summer 2022 and conclude by early 2024.

Project Updates

May 1, 2023 – The project is currently in construction. The project team expects construction on the transmission line to conclude this June and are awaiting further equipment to complete substation construction.

Structure

This image shows the existing Edens Ridge Substation that crews plan to expand. Substations serve as electrical intersections converting the power to voltage levels for use in homes, businesses and industrial facilities.

Existing substation size: 98 x 145 feet*
Proposed substation size after expansion: 155 x 241 feet*
