Northeast Oklahoma Transmission Enhancement Project
Representatives of AEP Oklahoma Transmission Company, Inc. (OK Transco) plan to expand the electric transmission system in northeast Oklahoma as part of a regional reliability effort. Construction expected to begin in summer 2028 and concludes in late 2029.
Southwest Power Pool (SPP), the regional transmission operator (RTO) who oversees and monitors the power grid across 17 states, mandated this project as a regional effort to enhance grid reliability in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.
The improvements:
- Enhance electric service reliability and resiliency.
- Reduce the frequency and duration of power outages.
- Improve ability to deliver power during extreme weather events.
- Optimize operations and lower the cost to deliver power across the region.
- Improve the transmission of low-cost energy to eastern areas of the SPP footprint, including northeast Oklahoma.
Project Updates
Fall 2026: In September 2026, we welcomed community members, landowners, Tribal Nations, and other stakeholders to a second round of open houses to share the final route for the Northeast Oklahoma Transmission Enhancement Project (NEOTEP) East and West segments. Open house materials continue to be available through the project's virtual open house website for those who are interested in learning more.
The final route recommendations for both projects have been submitted to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission for review. The routes reflect extensive planning, analysis, and engagement, with input from landowners, agencies, Tribal Nations, and local communities helping to shape the final recommendations.
Throughout the process, Ok Transco worked closely with Tribal Nations to gain a deeper understanding of tribal lands and identify culturally and historically significant areas. These conversations provided important perspectives that may not have been apparent through traditional routing studies alone and helped ensure those considerations were incorporated into the route selection process.
We filed a route plan for the Delaware to Monett segment (NEOTEP East) on August 21, 2026 as part of our application with the OCC.
