AEP Ohio representatives plan power grid upgrades in Franklin and Delaware counties. The project involves rebuilding about 4.5 miles of power line and upgrading three substations to increase operational performance and capacity of the local electric grid. As project continues to develop, company representatives are changing the construction method for a portion of the power line between Sawmill and Lazelle substations.
Adjustments include rebuilding the transmission line underground from Sawmill Substation east to State Route 315 (Olentangy River Road).
The existing power lines and substations date back to the 1930s. The infrastructure is aging, and the area has experienced multiple outages in recent years. The planned improvements modernize the local transmission system with upgraded substation equipment and steel poles, improve operational performance and increase electric capacity to provide for improved service. The regional grid operator PJM Interconnection (PJM) has identified the need for these upgrades to ensure reliable operation of the local electric grid. PJM is the regional transmission organization that coordinates the transportation of bulk electricity across a 13-state region.
February 2026: Company representatives announced plans to change the construction method by utilizing overhead and underground construction. Plans call for rebuilding within the existing right-of-way, although company representatives may need to acquire new or supplement easements to ensure the safe construction, operation and maintenance of the power line. The company plans to host an open house in the next few months to provide information related to the construction process, project schedule, and answer questions.
Company representatives plan to rebuild overhead transmisison facilities using single steel monopoles.
Typical Pole Height: Averaging Approximately 110 feet*Underground construction methods are typically only explored when overhead options are not reasible. Company representatives plan to bury plastic conduits and electric wire.
*Exact structure, height, and underground construction design requirements may vary.
AEP Ohio provides electricity to nearly 1.5 million customers.
