Benton Harbor Area Improvements

The Benton Harbor Area Improvements project upgrades about 6 miles of transmission line between Main Street Substation on West Main Street in Benton Harbor and Hickory Creek Substation near North Trail Lane in St. Joseph. Replacing wooden poles, that date back to the 1930s, with modern steel poles strengthens the local electric transmission system. These improvements support the growing demand for electricity in the county, reduce the likelihood of extended power outages and increase recovery time if outages occur.

The project involves:

  • Upgrading about 3 miles of transmission line along the St. Joseph River.
  • Relocating 0.5 miles of transmission line between Fisherman's Road and Industrial Court.
  • Rebuilding 2.5 miles of transmission line between Industrial Court and Main Street Substation.
