Northern St. Joseph CountyArea Improvements Project


Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) representatives plan to upgrade the electric transmission network serving customers in northern Indiana.

The project involves:

  • Building about 3 miles of 138-kilovolt transmission line
  • Building a substation off Adams Road

The improvements:

  • Provide an additional power source to support the area’s industrial growth
  • Provide residential customers with more reliable electric service
  • Encourage additional economic development with increased power capacity

Company officials expect construction to begin summer 2023 and conclude in spring 2024.

Project Updates

August 2023: Crews have begun construction on the new substation and expect to start construction on the new transmission line in early 2024.

January 2021: I&M representatives determined the new power line route after reviewing input provided by landowners and community members during the virtual open house in December.

December 2020: Indiana Michigan Power announced the Northern St. Joseph County Area Improvements Project and hosted a virtual open house to introduce proposed study segments and answer questions related to the project.
