Indiana Michigan Power representatives plan power grid upgrades to improve electric reliability and efficiency for customers in north-central Indiana.
The East Elkhart Transmission Line Project involves:
The existing 60-year-old power line consists of aging equipment that does not meet today's operational standards. In the past decade, the existing power line has experienced five service interruptions resulting in extended power outages for area customers. The planned improvements provide a new power source to strengthen the local electric power grid, provide power to a future customer in the area and support economic development.
September 2024: Since the final proposed route announcement in early 2023, I&M representatives have been performing field activities, as well as designing and engineering the line. As the project has progressed, we found the need to adjust the originally proposed timeline. Company officials now expect construction to begin spring 2027 and conclude spring 2028.
This project involves installing steel poles.
Typical Pole Height: Approximately 60 feet*
Typical Right-of-Way Width: Approximately 100 feet*
*Exact structure, height and right-of-way requirements may vary
