AEP Ohio representatives plan power grid upgrades to improve electric reliability for customers in Pickaway and Madison counties. The Pickaway – Madison Area Improvements project is a two-phase project providing customers with an additional power source and upgrading the existing transmission equipment to ensure a reliable flow of electricity to customers.
During the first phase, crews plan to build about 7 miles of 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission line to provide the additional power source and improve electric reliability in the area. In the second phase, crews plan to rebuild 26 miles of 69 kV transmission line and replace the deteriorating wooden poles with modern equipment. Company representatives plan to rebuild the power line in the existing right-of-way, although they may need to acquire new easements or supplement current easements to ensure the safe construction, operation and maintenance of the line. The projected costs of the upgrades are approximately $50 million.
The project takes place in Pleasant Township in Madison County and Darby, Monroe, Muhlenberg, Scioto and Harrison townships in Pickaway County.
Spring 2024: Phase one restoration activities are currently underway. AEP Ohio representatives plan to start phase two construction soon. Contract Land Staff (CLS) continues as the right-of-way contractor for the project. CLS representatives will continue to contact affected landowners to discuss upcoming project activities.
Fall 2023: AEP Ohio representatives finished phase one construction in fall 2023. Restoration activities begin in early 2024.
Summer 2023: AEP Ohio representatives started phase one construction in early 2020 and expect to finish later this year. Once complete, crews can start construction on the next phase. Contract Land Staff (CLS), the right-of-way contractor for the project, continues to work with affected landowners during construction.
Early 2020: Phase one of the project is currently under construction. Crews and contractors may be walking or using various equipment throughout the construction process. Contract Land Staff, the right-of-way contractor for the project, will continue to contact affected landowners to discuss upcoming project activities.
Proposed structures will vary depending on location. The project will use several structure types including steel single pole and H-frame structures that will be about 85-feet tall. The structures will be placed in the center of an approximate 60-foot wide right-of-way corridor.
* Exact structure, height and right-of-way may vary
