Niles AreaTransmission Improvements Project: Niles South

Indiana Michigan Power representatives plan to upgrade the power grid in the Niles area by making improvements to the transmission infrastructure.

The Niles Area Transmission Improvements Project includes power line and substation improvements in several components. The Niles South component, located in St. Joseph County, Indiana, involves:

  • Building the 138-kilovolt (kV) Boundary Substation
  • Building approximately 1 mile of 138-kV transmission line
  • Building a half mile of 69-kV transmission line

The project strengthens the local transmission grid and improves electric reliability for area customers. The new substation provides increased capacity to serve area customers and reduce the likelihood of service interruptions.

Project Updates

December 2025: Crews successfully completed construction of the transmission lines and Boundary Substation, and these facilities are now in service. Restoration efforts are planned for spring 2026. We appreciate your support and patience throughout this project.
