HuntingtonArea Improvements Project

Appalachian Power and its affiliate, West Virginia Transmission Co., plan to strengthen the electric transmission grid in Huntington by upgrading existing infrastructure.

The Huntington Area Improvements Project includes building approximately 3 miles of transmission line and upgrading existing substations to ensure continued reliable electric service for area customers.

Construction is underway and is expected to be complete in 2020. The estimated project investment is $25 million.

Project Updates

10/31/2019: Crews are working to install wire across 31st Street, Route 60 and the Guyandotte River. A helicopter will be used to pull the wire from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Nov. 3 and Nov. 10, depending on weather and other factors. All project upgrades should be complete by the end of next year.

03/14/2019: Construction of the 3 miles of transmission line is underway. All of the transmission line work is expected to conclude this summer. Construction at the substations will continue until 2020.

09/25/2018: Construction of the Huntington Area Improvements Project is expected to start this fall. Crews will begin with tree clearing of the right-of-way and construction of access roads.

11/07/2017: Appalachian Power has determined a proposed line route for the Huntington Area Improvements Project. Appalachian Power right-of-way representatives from O.R. Colan will start contacting landowners along the line route about upcoming activities later this year.

4/25/2018: Appalachian Power held an open house at Huntington High School to introduce study segments, answer questions related to the project and gather feedback from the community.
