Appalachian Power filed an application with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) seeking approval to construct its preferred route for the South Abingdon Extension 138 kV Transmission Project on March 7, 2016. The company received approval from the SCC on October 20, 2017.
The South Abingdon Extension is the first phase of planned improvements in Abingdon and Washington County. This part of the overall project addresses the area's need for continued reliable electric service.

11/06/2019: Now that the South Abingdon Extension is in service, right-of-way agents from Emerald Energy plan to work with landowners in the project area to restore properties where needed.
9/5/2018: Appalachian Power started construction on the underground portion of the transmission line.
10/20/2017: Appalachian Power received approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission to construct the project on October 20, 2017. Construction is expected to start later this fall.
