AEP Texas and Electric Transmission Texas (ETT) representatives plan to upgrade the electric transmission grid in south Texas by adding additional wire, or conductor, to existing transmission poles. The Rio Grande Valley Conductor Improvements Project involves upgrading approximately 190 miles of 345-kilovolt (kV) electric transmission line and building three new substations to enhance electric reliability.
This project is endorsed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) who oversees the electrical grid within the state of Texas.
The project team will begin installing additional wire, or conductor, along the existing transmission line structures beginning fall 2022.
Crews may need to replace or add poles at select points along the line. Crews will install identical poles where replacements are necessary.
*Exact structure, height, and right-of-way requirements may vary.
AEP Texas serves over one million consumers in the deregulated Texas retail electric marketplace.
