Atlanta AreaTransmission Improvements Project

Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) representatives plan to invest approximately $27 million to upgrade the electric transmission system in the west Atlanta area. Crews plan to begin construction in late 2022 and conclude by the end of 2023.

This project involves rebuilding approximately 19 miles of power line with steel single-pole structures and upgrading area substations to increase electric reliability for customers.

Project Updates

Fall 2023: Crews recently completed construction in early summer along approximately 10 miles of this project:

  • Crews rebuilt approximately 2 miles of line between the Cass Box Bay, located in eastern Cass County off County Road 1113, and the West Atlanta Substation, located about 7 miles southwest of Atlanta off U.S. Highway 59
  • Crews rebuilt approximately 2 miles of line between the IPC Domino Substation, located in northeastern Cass County between Rocky Point Park Road and U.S. Highway 59, and a transmission structure in northeastern Cass County west of U.S. Highway 59
  • Crews rebuilt approximately 6 miles of line between a transmission structure in northeastern Cass County west of U.S. Highway 69 and a transmission structure in northeastern Cass County off County Road 3437

SWEPCO crews began construction along the final approximately 9-mile section of this power line in mid-September and expect to complete the rebuild work by the end of the year. This work is between the Cass Box Bay and a transmission structure in northeastern Cass County off County Road 3437.

January 2021: SWEPCO crews and contractors performed preliminary surveying work in early 2021 within the utility's right-of-way along and adjacent to the line route.
