Valley AreaImprovements Program

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is upgrading the electric transmission grid in Van Buren, Berrien and Cass counties in southwestern Michigan. The Valley Area Improvements Program upgrades the transmission infrastructure to provide a reliable flow of electricity to local customers. The approximately $215 million investment rebuilds an aging infrastructure to reduce the likelihood of power outages and speed the recovery of service when outages occur.

The multi-phase project includes the following:

  • Rebuilding approximately 12 miles of single-circuit 69 kilovolt (kV) to double-circuit 69kV/138kV line
  • Rebuilding approximately 42 miles of 69kV line
  • Rebuilding approximately 5 miles of 34.5kV to 69kV line
  • Upgrading local substations
