Kentucky Power plans to strengthen the power grid in eastern Kentucky by making upgrades to aging transmission infrastructure in Perry and Leslie counties.
The Hazard - Wooton Project is the first project under the Eastern Kentucky Transmission Program. The project will rebuild approximately 7 miles of existing 161-kilovolt (kV) transmission line and make upgrades to other transmission facilities to ensure continued reliable electric service to customers.
Construction is expected to begin spring 2019 and be complete by fall 2020. Estimated budget for this phase is $45 million.
1/6/20 - Access roads and tree-clearing activities are complete. Crews plan to begin transmission line construction early this year. Company representatives expect construction to conclude by the end of the year.
7/23/19 - Crews are currently clearing trees and building access roads. Construction of the transmission line begins next year. You will receive updates on the schedule as the project moves forward.
3/16/18 - Kentucky Power received approval to construct the Hazard - Wooton transmission line portion of the project. The company’s application can be viewed under the “Regulatory” section on this page.
11/17/17 - Kentucky Power filed a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity with the Kentucky Public Service Commission seeking approval to construct the Hazard - Wooton Project.
8/24/17 - Kentucky Power held an informational open house to introduce the proposed study segments and answer questions related to the project.
