AEP Appalachian Transmission Co., an affiliate of Kingsport Power, plans to increase electric reliability to customers and reduce congestion on the overall transmission system in parts of Tennessee and Virginia by making significant upgrades to the Nagel Substation.
The Nagel Substation Expansion project includes expanding the existing 500-kilovolt (kV) yard and building a new 138 kV yard all on property owned by the company. The existing Gas Insulated Station (GIS) will be converted to an Air Insulated Station to reduce the need for ongoing maintenance and provide a more efficient and robust power system.
Construction is expected to start in the fall 2017 and be complete by the end of 2019. Estimated budget for the project is $105 million.
Engineers are finalizing plans to expand the substation. Construction is expected to begin this fall.
