East Fayetteville Station Improvements

AEP Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO) is planning to add a switching station at its East Fayetteville point of delivery to Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corp. (AECC) to accommodate upgrades to AECC’s local transmission system. AECC requested the new facilities as part of the conversion of the AECC substation and Ozarks Electric Cooperative transmission system from 69-kilovolt (kV) to 161-kV.

WHAT

SWEPCO is building a new 161-kV switching station in East Fayetteville at its point of delicery to AECC. The proposed $7.2 million project is subject to review by the Arkansas Public Service Commission.

WHY

AECC requested the switching station to support the conversion of the AECC substation and Ozarks Electric transmission system from 69-kV to 161-kV to better serve their members.

WHERE

The existing AECC East Fayetteville Substation is located off East Joyce Boulevard. SWEPCO’s new 161- kV switching station will be directly adjacent to the AECC substation on company-owned property. Transmission line work will occur in existing company-owned easements; however, some easements may need to be supplemented.

Project Updates

Construction is complete on the project and the substation was placed in-service in fall 2017.

SWEPCO held a come-and-go informational open house to learn more about the project on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at the Ozarks Electric Cooperative main office in Fayetteville.

On September 19, SWEPCO filed a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CCN) with the Arkansas Public Service Commission (APSC). The APSC granted approval of SWEPCO's CCN application on December 7, 2016.
